Bird flu-Causes, Symptoms, Treatment and prevention.

It all started again in January start where people noticed many birds lying dead amongst themselves and had no reasoning for it. As of now, the bird flu also known as avian influenza has been reported in over 9 states which include Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and New Delhi and over 800 birds have died in India. During this outbreak, the most common type of flu spreading across is the H5N1 and the H7N9.


As the name says -out-loud --- BIRDS. Direct contact or consumption of the affected poultry or bird, bird flu is an airborne disease and spreads through droplets in the air.

Symptoms may include:

  • High body temperature, fever or body shivering

  • Breathlessness

  • Sore throat

  • Muscle aches

  • Runny nose

  • Cough

  • Sneezing

  • Headache


Bird Flu(s) can be deadly, very deadly. According to the WHO (world health organization), the mortality rate of bird flu is around 60%.

Although drugs like oseltamivir, zanamivir or peramivir should work against it although there is no assurance.

If hospitalized immediately after the symptoms appear, it can be treated within a week or a two, although the H5N1 strain requires lots of special care and hospitalization.


Avoid contact with birds as much as possible, if cooking meat makes sure it heated well above 70 degree Celsius, wear PPE kits if you are handling the poultry and avoid buying from an open vendor shop.
